A Warm Welcome Home: A Modern Family Refresh in Sylvania
This home had great bones from the start… vaulted ceilings, generous natural light, and an open layout that begged for connection. But when the homeowners relocated from a smaller Chicago home to Sylvania to be closer to family, the space needed more than a simple furniture shuffle. It needed to feel like home. Comfortable, modern, and layered with warmth… designed for a young family settling into a new chapter.
One of the first challenges was scale. Furniture that worked beautifully in their previous home felt undersized and disconnected in the new space. Rather than forcing pieces to fit, we thoughtfully rehomed existing furniture elsewhere in the house and started fresh in the main living area. This allowed us to design intentionally for how the family lives now… gathering, relaxing, and welcoming people in.
The “before” featured a cool gray sectional that leaned more practical than personal. For the refresh, we shifted the palette warmer, introducing soft, grounded upholstery with subtle texture and contrast. The new furniture layout creates better flow and conversation zones, while still anchoring the room and honoring its architectural height. Layered textiles, sculptural tables, and a bold, graphic rug bring in an edge that feels current but not trendy.
Warm wood tones balance the crisp lines of the upholstery, while lighting plays a key role in softening the scale of the room. Table lamps and floor lighting create intimacy in a space that could otherwise feel cavernous, especially in the evening. Thoughtful styling through pillows, throws, art, and greenery adds depth without clutter, allowing the room to breathe.
The result is a space that oozes comfort while still feeling modern and intentional. It’s welcoming without being precious. Edgy without being cold. A home that reflects where this family has been and where they’re going next.
Great design isn’t about starting from scratch every time. It’s about recognizing potential, editing with purpose, and spaces that support real life. This Sylvania home now does exactly that… offering a warm, modern welcome home for years to come.
